Abstract
Evidence is presented indicating that (L)-2, 5-dihydrophenylalanine (DHP) is capable of mimicking discoloration of apple callus tissue and browning necrosis and desiccation of apple stem apices caused by virulent isolates of Erwinia amylovora. In addition these symptoms develop in approximately the same time interval whether caused by DHP or the pathogen per se.
Data are also presented indicating that virulent strains of E. amylovora cause intense cellular leakage from apple callus tissue.
The time required and the population levels necessary to cause cellular leakage approximate those required for browning and necrosis to develop in apical stem tissue.
It would appear that apple callus tissue provides an exceptionally good clonal substrate on which to test induced mutants for their virulence intensity.
