Abstract
Rosanne Sanders (Sanders, 1988), a prize winning apple artist of Devon, England wrote, ‘From the Garden of Eden to the Big Apple, from William Tell to Johnny Appleseed, to Paris of Troy who gave the troublesome golden apple to Aphrodite which started the Trojan War, the apple has occupied a very special place in our affections both as a symbol and as one of the simplest and most delicious of Nature’s gifts’. One reason for some of this affection is its great variety in colors, flavors, flesh textures and other features.
In this chapter we discuss some of the genetic diversity in the genus Malus and suggest that some of these exotic diversities could be even further incorporated into new apple cultivars to make them even better than those we now have.
