Abstract
Plums have been cultivated for over 2000 years.
Several authors (Hedrick, 1911; Knight, 1969) have listed 1000–2000 plum cultivars from 14–15 species that have been utilized at one time or another.
Plum species and cultivars are quite diverse in fruit characteristics such as size, shape, color, texture, aroma, and quality.
Fruits are used fresh, dried, or canned, and season of maturity ranges from June to October in the northern hemisphere.
Plant characteristics are also very diverse, ranging from shrubs to large trees, spreading to upright, thick to thin leaves, and early to late blooming.
Plums are utilized as rootstocks and for their ornamental value as well.
