Abstract
Similar plant responses to DIF and red/far-red treatments (R/FR) may indicate that the same physiological mechanism is involved, but does not prove that DIF interferes with the phytochrome mode of action.
It was suggested that temperature changes are perceived by phytochrome attached to membranes, but there is no direct prove that phytochrome is closely linked to membranes.
There is evidence that gibberellins are involved in regulation of elongation.
It may therefore be more likely that both DIF and R/FR treatments have influence on gibberellin biosynthesis and/or action.
Experiments with gibberellin deficient dwarf mutants could bring more insight in the physiological background of DIF. The role of the carbohydrate status of the plant is not clear, but seems of less importance since the effect of DIF on elongation is rather immediate.
