Abstract
Part A A survey of studies describing light transmission and enhancement in greenhouses is presented.
The weaknesses of full-scale investigations is revealed, and the value of small physical models, used to validate computer models is shown.
Approximate theoretical analyses are shown to give adequate representations of light transmission processes, sufficient to produce design guidelines for manufacturers, or tutorial programmes for students.

Part B The complexities of crop penetration by light, including the significance of the photosynthetic non-linear response to irradiance are described.
The resultant requirement for detailed not averaged irradiance levels at each leaf is assessed.
Steady progress towards achieving computerised calculations of the spread of leaf irradiance in various row crops is then detailed.
