Abstract
The efforts of improving and expanding the cultivation of tropical and subtropical fruits in Cyprus, started in the early 1970’s, with the introduction of nucellar varieties of oranges, grapefruits, mandarins and lemons from California.

At the same time experiments with Avocado began with the introduction of rootstocks and cultivars.
A programme was also established to promote other tropical and subtropical fruit crops, but this unfortunately came to a halt with the advent of the Turkish invasion of the Island.

The programme recommenced in the early 1980’s.
