Abstract
The effect of flooding of the root system on the growth of the arboreal species, Ingá and Açai, was evaluated in a greenhouse experiment.
After 55 days of inundation, the total accumulation of dry matter in the Açaí plants was reduced by 10%, that of the shoot fell by 18.5%, while the dry matter on the roots increased by 21%. In the Ingá plants, the accumulation of dry matter in the shoot and roots was reduced by 70 and 72% respectively.
In these plants, flooding provoked a greater partition of photosynthate for the development of adventitious roots.
The Açaí was shown to be the species most suitable for cultivation in a situation subject to periodical flooding, since its growth was not significantly affected by induced stress.
