Abstract
Weeds are mainly controlled by herbicide application.
Environmental policies in many countries are aiming to reduce the amount of herbicide used.
Alternative weed control using thermal and mechanical techniques are being experimented with in several countries.

Spectral and spatial techniques should be combined to obtain a high weed crop discriminator sensor.

A comparison of two different spectral techniques is presented and each one was evaluated.
A portable spectrophotometer was designed for taking field samples without destroying the leaves.
Six different crops and ten different weed types were considered during the analysis and high rates of success obtained with a minimum number of wavelengths.
