PHYTOTOXICITY OF CULTURE FILTRATES FROM CRYPHONECTRIA PARASITICA THE CAUSAL AGENT OF CHESTNUT BLIGHT

Abstract
Cryphonectria parasitica (Murril) Barr., the casual agent of chestnut blight, produces in vitro phytotoxic substances that may be involved in disease production and utilized for in vitro selection of blight resistant chestnut plants, as an alternative strategy to biological control.
Culture filtrates of a normal (Cp78) and a hypovirulent (Cp44) isolate of C. parasitica were applied at various concentrations on seeds of Triticum durum “Simeto”. Both filtrates did not inhibit the germination process but induced a significant reduction of root and epycotil growth of treated seeds compared to the control.
There was not statistically difference between the inhibition induced by hypovirulent and normal isolates.
Results confirm that C. parasitica produces phytotoxic substances that probably play a different role in the host-pathogen relations.
No correlation was found between virulence and phytotoxicity.
