Abstract
This paper describes the results of biomonitoring with lichens from spring 1993 to spring 1996 beside the "Traforo del Frejus" motorway (A 32), Lower Susa Valley, Province of Turin, N. Italy, as part of a pilot project for the experimentation of ecosensors.
Lichens were assessed as indicators and also as accumulators through transplantation and the establishment of "lichen observation sites" near the motorway at Messa Vecchia along the stretch running from Avigliana to Turin.
The efficacy of the methods used is discussed and the monthly concentrations of Mn, Zn, Pb, Cu, Cd and Cr absorbed by thalli exposed for one year are presented.
Possible space and time patterns are suggested for some of these metals in the light of their demonstrated preferences.
