Abstract
The increasing requirement of supermarkets and multiples for fixed quantities of high quality produce at specific times has imposed new challenges for growers of horticultural crops.
Some of the greatest challenges are confronted by brassica growers where the production of calabrese and cauliflowers, in terms of timing and volume, are notoriously variable and unreliable.
Much of this unreliability is caused by variation in the time of floral initiation and the rate of curd/spear development.
The role of photo-thermal environment in controlling flower initiation in brassicas are reviewed, as are factors controlling later development of curds, spears and flowers.
The use of such information as the basis of yield prediction systems is discussed.
