Abstract
A complete generic survey of the bromeliad family (Bromeliaceae) is provided including all new established and reduced genera.
The number of currently accepted species, centres of distribution, a brief morphological characterization, and requirements for cultivation are given for each genus.
Of the about 2700 species more than 50% are known to be in cultivation in private, public, or scientific collections providing an immense stock for new breeding.
Natural populations are increasingly threatened by human impact and collecting in the field must be done only with utmost awareness of responsibility for nature protection and by strictly respecting CITES regulations, the Convention of Biodiversity, and local laws.
