Abstract
Flower morphology especially stamen number/pistil length ratio and intimate stigma/anthers contact is often associated with self-compatibility in almonds, but the relationship is not fully understood.
In order to ascertain the correlation, investigations were carried out on indigenous almond selections.
On the basis of stigma/anthers position, the selections mainly fell into two categories i.e. hypostigamatic having stigma below the highest anthers and epistigmatic with stigma above the highest anthers.
Out of the sixteen self-compatible selections, one, five and eleven selections had peristigmatic, hypostigmatic and epistigmatic flowers, respectively.
Partially self-compatible selection ‘Tree No.16’ alongwith cvs. ‘Drake’ (self-incompatible) and ‘Star Basin’ (self-compatible) showed epistigmatic flowers while in ‘Badamjor Spillo No.2C’, a self-incompatible selection, hypostigmatic flowers were observed.
Stamen number/pistil length (SN/PL) ratio ranged from 1.00–2.65 in self-compatible selections and cv. ‘Star Basin’ while it extended from 1.26–2.24 in partially self-compatible selections and in self-incompatible cv. ‘Drake’. No direct relationship between flower morphology and self compatibility has been observed and it appears to be a cultivar specific character.
