CONTROL OF FUSARIUM WILT ON RUSCUS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF ISOLATES COLLECTED IN LIGURIA

Abstract
Ruscus racemosus is grown on the Ligurian Riviera for cut foliage (330 ha) and the production is almost completely exported to Europe and the United States.
Like other asparagus species, Ruscus plants are cultivated in the shade for more than twenty years in the same soil and for this reason serious damages imputed to Fusarium wilt can occur.
Repeated applications of fungicides to prevent losses are often recommended. In 1997-98 we carried out research to identify and characterise by vegetative compatibility groups (VCGs) the isolates of Fusarium oxysporum obtained from infected plants.
Almost all the isolates collected were pathogenic on their original host and on some ornamental asparagus plants (Asparagus plumosus and Asparagus sprengeri). For the control of this disease, an experimental trial was performed with fungicides and biocontrol agents on artificially inoculated plants grown under greenhouse conditions.
Established plants were arranged in four randomised blocks.
The different treatments were applied before or immediately after transplanting, according to the protocol.
Prochloraz, benomyl, a mixture of prochloraz + benomyl, dodine, were used as chemical products; formulates of different strains of Fusarium oxysporum, Streptomyces griseoviridis, Gliocladium virens, Trichoderma harzianum, were used as antagonists for biological control.
The number of diseased plants was recorded at different times.
Significant differences in the incidence of disease severity were observed with the pre-infection and the post-infection applications as compared to the untreated plots, however all treatments had a limited disease control activity.
No differences were observed between fungicides and antagonists.
