MINERAL ELEMENT CONTENT IN LEAVES OF DIFFERENT APPLE ROOTSTOCKS AND OF ‘ELISE’ SCION CULTIVAR ON THE SAME ROOTSTOCKS

Abstract
At the Wilanów Experimental Station on an alluvial loamy soil twenty two rootstocks of different origin were compared: P 2, P 22, P 14, P 16, Nr 47, P 59 and P 60 (all from the Polish breeding programme); B 9, B 146 (57-146) and B 396 (62-396) (Russian selection); PB-4 (Belarussian selection); M.7, M.26, M.27 and eight M.9 sub-clones (EMLA, T337, T339, 75l, 984, RN29, Pajam 1 and Pajam 2). Leaves of rootstocks were sampled from stoolbeds and a nursery and leaves of ‘Elise’ scion on different rootstocks in the nursery and in the orchard.
P 16 and P 14 promoted a higher leaf N concentration.
PB-4 and ‘Elise’ grafted on it contained less N and P. M.7, P 60 and P 14 usually favoured higher P concentrations.
In respect to K, Mg and Ca results were rather erratic; those observed in the orchard did not reflect differences noted in stoolbeds or in the nursery.
A high variation of leaf nutrient concentrations due to season was also observed.
It was difficult to relate a significant differences between rootstocks to their vigour, origin or depth of rooting.
