Abstract
Italy is one of the most important European countries for vegetable cultivation.
Although both vegetable area and production have not greatly varied in the last de-cades,
the industry is continuously evolving as it is faced with social and economic
changes, increased competitiveness from neighbouring countries, and a scarcity of re-newable
resources.
In this paper some of the aspects which characterize vegetable pro-duction
in Italy and which could play a pivotal role in the future of vegetable industry
are presented and discussed.
Attention is addressed to the innovation in technology
and production process, to the current condition and future of protected cultivation,
and to the needs and strategies for the improvement of irrigation efficiency.
