Abstract
The aim of this contribution is to provide an improved perception of the eco-nomic
impact of creating a free trade area within and outside the Mediterranean re-gion.
It is important to understand the general economic and political framework in
which the so-called Barcelona process will develop in the coming years.
This involves
an analysis of a number of key indicators related to the economies of the Northern and
Southern Mediterranean countries, i.e. demography, economy, agriculture, produc-tion,
consumption, and trade with special reference to the fruit and vegetable sector.
