Abstract
Sweetpotato is the seventh most important crop in the world with an estimated 135 million metric tons produced annually, and ranks third in developing countries for caloric contribution in human diets (FAOSTAT 1998). In addition, sweetpotatoes are the most important vegetable crop produced in North Carolina, which is the leading supplier of sweetpotatoes in the US with annual production of ca. 218 thousand metric tons per year (ca. 35-40% of the national supply). Despite this importance, there has been a lack of genomic studies and resources for sweetpotato.
To address this shortcoming, we have formed a Sweetpotato Genomics Initiative at NCSU. Herein we describe the current efforts in the development and implementation of genomic resources for the identification of resistance genes, and towards the production of novel plant products in sweetpotato.
