THE STATUS OF FIRE BLIGHT ON POME FRUITS IN IRAN

Abstract
Erwinia amylovora, the causal agent of fire blight disease, has a host range of more than 100 species of Rosaceae.
It was initially recognised in Iran on pear trees in Karaj.
Various surveys showed the establishment of the disease in many fruit tree orchards in Azarbaijan and Ghazvin provinces.
The yield losses in humid infected areas were severe with an unexpected rate of progression of infection.
The diseased samples from various susceptible hosts such as pear, apple, quince and rose were collected from different areas of the country during the year.
A total of 74 strains of E. amylovora and five strains of Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae, as associated bacteria, were isolated and identified using standard biochemical and pathogenicity tests.
The results obtained verify the presence of different strains of the fire blight causal agent of E. amylovora in Iran.
An extensive epidemiological and prediction investigation is now required.
