Abstract
The protea industrys representative body in South Africa, the South African Protea Producers and Exporters Association (SAPPEX), inaugurated the Joint Cultivar Evaluation Committee with the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) to harmonize the procedures regarding release of new cultivars from the ARC Proteaceae breeding project.
The committee decides by consensus which genotypes to include on the list of candidate cultivars.
The committee consists of the breeder, exporters and growers.
A numerical rating of the selections has also been implemented.
Since 1998 over 100 clones have been identified for possible release to the industry.
Some characteristics of the newly selected clones of Leucospermum and Leucadendron are described.
The characteristics are used to make comparisons between the selections and with established cultivars.
The comparisons provide insight into what consensus selection delivers, highlighting strengths of the system and possible shortfalls.
