Abstract
Subtropical fruit crops lag temperate crops in breeding progress with the exception of citrus but progress is being made in avocado, fig, persimmon, and olive.
There are no current breeding efforts in pomegranates.
In the last decade molecular characterization using molecular techniques have been initiated for evaluating familial relationships and are now being used for crop improvement with special emphasis in citrus and persimmon.
