Abstract
An enormous lack of experience can be registered concerning the suitability of plants when constructing steep noise barrier wall systems.
Only properly adapted species are suitable for the establishment of vegetation.
They have to survive extreme temperatures caused by their exposed location.
Drought as well as limited root space are further stress factors.
In order to cut costs, low maintenance planting is required with an attractive display at the same time.
Research experiments dealing with planting of steep noise barrier wall systems carried out by the Landscaping Department of the Bayerische Landesanstalt für Weinbau und Gartenbau in Veitshöchheim reveal that the choice of plants and the kind of system are responsible for their success.
Differences in vitality of plants due to the substrates could only found with perennials.
Shrubs showed these differences only during the first 3 years.
The different substrates, used for the earth core had no influence on plant development.
Eleven plants out of 41 tested, proved suitable.
Thirteen more species proved partly suitable.
Nearly half of the plants proved unsuitable for a lasting low maintenance planting.
