Abstract
Several experiments were performed at the Department of Vegetable Crops of the Research Institute Geisenheim in 2001 and 2002 to investigate the subsurface growth of white asparagus during the harvest period.
In a part of the experiments, the length increase of each individual spear was determined every day.
The time dependent development of the subsurface biomass of individual spears as well as the time dependent development of the total subsurface spear biomass could be de-scribed very well based on a logistic differential equation (R2 values above 0.98 in all cases). Using descriptive statistical methods, the experiments were also used to inves-tigate soil moisture effects on the subsurface growth of white asparagus.
