Abstract
This paper introduces a simple mathematical model for the evolution in time of the concentration of both nutrients and potentially toxic ions, such as Na+, in the recirculating culture solution in closed growing systems.
The model was calibrated for tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) using data from literature and validated with independent data sets from experiments conducted in different growing seasons using water with different NaCl concentration.
The results of validation show that the model may be a useful tool for the management of closed loop hydroponics.
