DETECTION OF PLUM POX POTYVIRUS IN WEEDS

PPV is polyphagous and very epidemic.
Apart from cultivated and wild Prunus species several other woody and herbaceous species have been identified as PPV hosts under experimental and to a lesser extent also under field conditions.
The role of weed species in the spread of PPV is poorly understood.
In order to study the importance of weed species as a possible reservoir of PPV, 548 samples of weed species belonging to 59 genera were collected in the years 2000, 2001 and 2002 in PPV infected peach orchards at different locations in SW and NE of Slovenia.
DAS-ELISA analyses of collected samples showed positive results for several common weed species.
PPV was determined in 18 out of 119 samples of Taraxacum officinale, 3 out of 52 samples of Sonchus sp., 4 out of 18 samples of Cirsium arvense, 3 out of 12 samples of Convolvulus arvensis, 3 out of 7 samples of Solanum nigrum, 2 out of 11 samples of Clematis sp., one out of 19 samples of Trifolium sp., one out of 5 samples of Cichorium sp., one out of 2 samples of Rorippa sylvestris and the only sample of Ajuga genevensis. Except for Solanum nigrum, Sonchus sp. and Trifolium sp. these weeds have not been reported as PPV hosts before.
