DIFFERENCES IN SEEDINESS, FRUIT QUALITY AND LEAF CHARACTER OF JAPANESE PERSIMMONS ´TAISHU´ AND ´MATSUMOTOWASE-FUYU´

Abstract
Experiments were conducted to determine the differences of seediness, fruit quality and leaf characters in Japanese persimmons Taishu, a promising new medium-maturing cultivar of pollination constant non-astringent (PCNA) type and Matsumotowase-Fuyu, the major medium-maturing cultivar of PCNA type in Japan.
Two-year-old Taishu top-grafted on 20-year-old Saijo (TG-TS), 7-year-old Taishu (TS), and 22-year-old Matsumotowase-Fuyu (MF), all with Zenjimaru as a pollinizer, were used for the study.
The harvest date of TG-TS and TS were 13 days and 6 days earlier than that of MF (20 Oct.). At harvest when the color chart values of fruit skin of TG-TS and TS were about 4.5 and those values of MF were 5.5, fruit weights of TG-TS and TS were both heavier than that of MF. Soluble solid contents of TG-TS were the highest, and that of TS was higher than that of MF. Numbers of perfect seed of TG-TS and TS were 1.8 and 1.6, respectively, being fewer than MF (4.8). All the cultivars contained a few imperfect seeds.
Therefore, total seeds in TG-TS and TS were much fewer than that of MF. Weights of perfect seed in TG-TS and TS were 1.05 g and 1.14 g, respectively, and those were lower than that in MF (1.46g). Weights of imperfect seed of TG-TS and TS were also lower than that of MF. The values of seed width to seed length of TG-TS and TS were 0.59 and 0.61, respectively, which were smaller than that of MF (0.75). The values of leaf width to leaf length in TG-TS and TS were 0.71 and 0.70, respectively, which were higher than that of MF (0.57). Specific leaf weights (leaf dry weight per leaf area) of TG-TS and TS were 9.4 mgcm-2 and 9.8 mgcm-2, respectively, and those values were similar compared with that of MF (9.6 mgcm-2). Leaf flesh weight and leaf area of TG-TS were higher than those of TS and MF. It was suggested that lower seediness, earlier maturing and higher soluble solid contents of TG-TS and TS than MF depended on genetic character.
Earlier maturity and higher soluble solids were closely related to higher leaf area.
