BACTERIOCIN PRODUCTION BY BRAZILIAN ISOLATES OF RALSTONIA SOLANACEARUM IN VITRO

Abstract
Antagonistic, avirulent bacteriocin-producing Ralstonia solanacearum strains were investigated for potential biological control of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) bacterial wilt in Brazil.
Fourteen avirulent or weakly virulent isolates of R. solanacearum were studied with respect to production of bacteriocins in vitro.
The double-agar method technique was employed with three virulent strains of the bacterium as indicators.
For each producer:indicator combination, three petri dishes were prepared and the assay was repeated three times.
Based on the diameter of the inhibition zone, significant differences were detected in the ability of the 14 isolates to produce bacteriocins, as well as in the degree of sensitivity to bacteriocins among the virulent strains tested.
Statistical data analysis revealed significant interaction between avirulent bacteriocin-producing and virulent strains.
In addition, it was demonstrated that none of the bacteriocin-producing strains was inhibited by its own bacteriocin.
