Abstract
Progress in the investigation of three methods of energy saving in greenhouses is described.
The use of windbreak fences to reduce the effect of wind on heat loss can yield immediate benefits for many growers, and an assessment has been made of the durability of alternative windbreak materials.
A double-layer air-inflated polythene greenhouse has a much-reduced heat requirement compared with a glasshouse, and the performance of two prototype houses of this type is being evaluated.
A study is in progress of the possibility of adapting an existing electricity generating station in Ireland so that some of its reject heat can be utilised to heat a glasshouse complex, and the principle of the proposed scheme is outlined.
