Abstract
Species of Osmanthus, evergreen trees or shrubs, are widespread in Southeast Asia, mainly China.
Four main distribution areas are distinguished within their worldwide distribution in East Asia and Southeast North America.
A classification system of Osmanthus cultivars is proposed with four cultivar groups in the species O. fragrans (sweet osmanthus). Cultivars occur in only two other Osmanthus species.
The use of Osmanthus in cultivation is discussed.
