Abstract
Horticulture in Europe is an economically important sector covering a large variety of plants and subject to an ever increasing trade.
Horticultural crops are potentially threatened by a great diversity of pests and diseases, and therefore it is essential for Plant Protection Services to implement phytosanitary measures to avoid the introduction and spread of pests via commercial exchanges of plants and plant products.
It can be noted that plant quarantine is a field where international cooperation is needed and the role of the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO) which provide technical advice to its fifty member countries was briefly described during the Workshop.
In order to maintain horticultural crops in good health and in particular to produce healthy planting material, certification schemes have also been elaborated by European Plant Protection Services.
Both plant quarantine and certification are useful tools which can be used by governments to improve the health status of horticultural crops in Europe.
