FRUIT AND PLANTING MATERIAL PRODUCTION BY IRRIGATED ‘PÉROLA’ PINEAPPLE IN RESPONSE TO PLANTING SPACING UNDER SEMI-ARID CONDITIONS

Abstract
The pineapple crop requires special attention concerning to the choice of the most adequate planting densities.
In some cases higher planting density may satisfy both producer requirements for productivity and consumer requirements for fruit quality.
This study was carried out to determine the influence of planting spacing on the yield of both fruits and planting material (slips, suckers) of ‘Pérola’ pineapple in the semi-arid region of North Minas Gerais State, Brazil.
The experiment was set up in a randomized blocks design, with four treatments, four replications and 24 plants per plot.
The following spacings were studied differing according to the distance between double rows: T1 – 80 x 40 x 30 cm; T2 – 90 x 40 x 30 cm; T3 – 100 x 40 x 30 cm; and T4 – 120 x 40 x 30 cm.
These treatments were assessed based upon the following variables: stem diameter at soil surface level; ‘D’ leaf length at floral induction; fruit fresh mass, with and without crown; fruit diameter and length; pulp firmness and total soluble solids; and suckers, slips and fruit yield per hectare.
Plants set up at smaller spacings (T1 and T2) presented stems with larger diameters, higher productivity of both fruits (T1) and suckers (T1, T2 and T3). The other variables studied were not affected with statistical significance by the spacing treatments.
