NUTRITIONAL STATUS OF KIWIFRUIT IN ORGANIC AND CONVENTIONAL FARMING SYSTEMS

Abstract
In Galicia (NW Spain), the region with the highest production of kiwifruit in Spain, different farming systems are used, among which are the Conventional and Organic system.
The objective of this study was to compare the soil fertility and the nutritional status and production of kiwi plants in conventional and organic farming systems.
For this, several farming-related parameters, such as bud break index, flowering index, kinetics of fruit growth and yield, were studied throughout the production cycle.
The evolution of soil chemical composition and the nutritional status of the plant (leaves and fruits) were also analysed.
The results obtained in this study suggest that the organic farming system would help to increase the pH of acid soils and to improve the availability of nutrients for the plant, without exhausting the soil, hence, having direct advantages for the farmer, since there would be an increase in the commercial fruit production.
