Abstract
The results of eight experiments carried out in 2005 and 2006 on the apple tree cultivars ampion and Ligol are presented here.
The formulation TOPS, containing 10% of 3,5,6-TPA (3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridil-oxyacetic acid), was used at two doses: 15 and 20 tablets/ha (one tablet =1 g a.i.), against pre-harvest fruit drop.
The experiments were carried out in two experimental orchards located in different climatic and agrotechnical conditions.
NAA as a salt with triethanolamine (as the Polish preparation Pomonit Super 050 SL) was used as an additional control.
The effect on the dynamics of fruit drop, on fruit quality at harvest and after storage, as well as on shoot growth and subsequent blooming, was determined.
It was found that TOPS was an effective formulation for reducing pre-harvest fruit drop in apple trees.
However, its effectiveness depended upon weather conditions and the dynamics of fruit maturation before harvest, as well as on the apple cultivar.
TOPS prevented fruit drop to an extent similar or greater than Pomonit Super 050 SL a comparable preparation, depending upon the experiment.
The effects of TOPS and Pomonit Super on fruit size were generally similar, but depended on their concentrations and the experimental orchard conditions.
In some cases, TOPS improved the red colour of apples and their internal quality, especially after storage.
