Abstract
New artichoke cultivars with sexual reproduction, such as Symphony, have recently emerged.
These varieties produce high yields with adequate crop manage-ment and are well suited for both industrial processing and fresh consumption.
However, farmers continue to grow traditional varieties with vegetative reproduction, such as Blanca de Tudela, due to uncertainty involved in the market prices of these new varieties.
In this context, the aim of this work was to compare the total cost of new and traditional cultivars, enabling the break-even point of new cultivar to be assessed.
The work was carried out in the main artichoke producing area of Spain, the province of Murcia, and data refer to a field experiment.
The break-even point of the new cultivar means that fresh market prices can fall by 47.81% for a zero profit to be achieved.
Furthermore, a proportional reduction of fresh market prices of 15.73% for Symphony cultivar will allow farmers to obtain the same profit as Blanca de Tudela cultivars.
The results will help farmers decide whether the new cultivar is an eco¬nomically viable proposition.
