Abstract
Compact growth is a desirable trait in many crop plants but it can be difficult to obtain by traditional breeding.
As an alternative, biotechnology could replace chemical treatment by providing plant varieties with optimized growth habits.
Here we introduce the family of SHI (SHORT INTERNODE) transcription factors, which through overexpression studies have resulted in compact plants of very diverse species.
The family of SHI genes was investigated in silico in a variety of plant species and phylogenetic analysis of their sequences was performed.
Expression data available from Arabidopsis microarray studies were also analyzed by comparing the expression profiles of six SHI gene probes with those of other genes important for plant growth and development.
The results are used to asses SHI gene expression as a genetic tool for dwarfing.
