Abstract
The processes of breeding and selection of desirable new forms of ornamentals from seed as F1 as well as open-pollinated (OP) cultivars are outlined.
The rigorous testing parameters employed prior to the final choice of commercialising new cultivars are discussed.
The importance of worldwide trials of new introductions is addressed as well as the need to set up a standardised recording system to evaluate cultivars and assess their full horticultural potentials in the expanding horticultural market in new continents.
