Abstract
The uptake of water, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium by cucumbers was studied in relation to solar radiation and to the temperature of the air and of the recirculating nutrient solution.
Diurnal variations in the uptake of water, nitrogen and potassium were closely related to changes in light intensity (< 3 MJm-2 h-1) and air temperature (19–26.5°C); the maximum uptake rates coincided with the highest light intensity and air temperature.
In contrast, diurnal variations in the uptake of phosphorus appeared to be influenced less directly by light intensity and were closely related to the temperature of the nutrient solution (22.1–27.2°C); the rate of uptake was highest when the solution temperature was highest.
The diurnal uptakes of nitrogen and potassium were highly correlated with the uptake of water.
