Abstract
Recent development in water culture and in plant production using inert media has derived new experience and new techniques being applicable to surveillance of such cropping systems.

The quality of a cropping system is dependent on its ability to maintain high fertility.
The fertility of a cropping system decreases when essential nutrients become present in amounts being insufficient or excessive.
Presence or accumulation of inessential or toxic ions may lead to infertility through increase in salinity or simple toxicity.

It is possible to record amounts of minerals being applied to a cropping system with irrigation water and fertilizers and to record typical and actual uptakes of minerals in crops during crop production.

Sufficient knowledge of inputs to and outputs from cropping systems makes maintenance of nutritional fertility possible.
