Abstract
Bayoud or Fusarium wilt of date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) is known since 1870 in North Africa.
It is due to Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. albedinis (Killian and Maire) Gordon.
One of the strategies undertaken by our research team has as the main objective the knowledge of plant-pathogen interactions.
The present work investigates the isolation and identification of secondary metabolites produced by the two protagonists.
Chemical analysis of their crude extracts was performed by GC-MS on a Hewlett Packard 6890 gas chromatograph coupled to a mass spectrometer electron impact type HP 5973.
The results obtained in our experimental conditions, allowed to detect several volatile thermostable organic compounds, including ethanol 2-butoxy-phosphate (1:3) commonly known as 2-butoxyethanol phosphate.
This substance had been detected in both the pathogen, cultured on Czapek-glucose liquid medium, and the roots of the susceptible cultivar ‘Deglet Nour’ growing in the in soils infested with the causative agent of bayoud.
This compound is reported in the literature as being toxic and having an antibiotic action.
Accumulation in this pathosystem is somewhat enigmatic.
At present, one of our goals is attempting to shed light on the causes of its concentration as well as the roles it could play in this compatible host (date palm) – pathogen (F. oxysporum f. sp. albedinis) relationship.
