Abstract
The physical and chemical tests used to ensure that products are made to specification may be the same as those used in application studies.
In the paper, we identify some advantages and disadvantages of using the same tests.
Some of the pitfalls are explored with practical examples from the author’s experience.

Chemical reactions between ingredients need to be examined when formulating substrates, and interpreting results.
