Abstract
The use of artificial media for plant growing has increased tremendously in the last fifteen years.
The media that are most common utilize sphagnum peat moss, vermiculite, and perlite in various combinations.
Some media contain sand to increase bulk density or reduce cost.
Much interest has been generated in using wood residuals such as redwood sawdust, soft and hardwood barks, especially when growing nursery material in larger containers.
At present, considerable fascination exists around the use of very lightweight expanded foam beads or ground by-products.
