Hydroponics and Aquaponics
The Working Group Hydroponics and Aquaponics has been developed to support the ISHS mission to promote and encourage research and education in horticultural science and to facilitate cooperation and knowledge transfer on a global scale through symposia and congresses, publications and scientific structure.
Membership of this Working Group is open to all interested researchers, educators, students and horticultural industry professionals with specific interest in the fields of hydroponics and aquaponics. Hydroponics may be defined as ‘production of horticultural produce in a system or container that is isolated from the ground with all its nutrition provided in the feed water’, therefore it can also be defined as soilless culture. Aquaponics may be defined as ‘the integration of hydroponics and the production of aquatic animals grown in isolated systems or containers to provide a symbiotic relationship between plants and aquatic animals that results in shared water and plant nutrition’. These two systems can be either coupled or de-coupled.
As Working Group Chair, I am keen to hear from people or institutions who may be interested in hosting a symposium on Hydroponics and Aquaponics in their country, so please feel free to reach out to me for further information including details on how to conduct a successful ISHS symposium. In addition, I would like to hear from Working Group members on interesting and novel research, education or system development that we can share with our members via this forum.
The Working Group is associated with the Division Greenhouse and Indoor Production Horticulture. I look forward to hearing from you all regarding global hydroponics and aquaponics and hope to see you soon at a future Working Group event.
