Abstract
The chestnut is an extraordinary horticultural opportunity and an invaluable source of high quality nuts, prized food for an increasingly large demand of bio-line and environmentally-friendly products.
It is a good contributor to carbon sequestration, valuable source of biomass, furthermore the chestnut landscape offers great benefits in terms of social welfare.
The world leading producer is China, but the chestnut has an important economic and environmental role in Korea, Japan and many European Countries.
New interest is rising in the USA and in the Southern Hemisphere, mostly in Australia and Chile, the culture is very promising.
The level of organization, the technical development and the dissemination of the results of basic and applied research are not the same in all producing areas and this limits the potential of the chestnut industry to compete in a globalized world.
