EFFECTIVENESS OF TORYMUS SINENSIS IN THE BIOLOGICAL CONTROL OF DRYOCOSMUS KURIPHILUS IN ITALY

Abstract
Dryocosmus kuriphilus is a global serious pest of chestnut.
Original of China, it was accidentally introduced into several countries across the world.
Biological control using its natural parasitoid Torymus sinensis is the most promising method to control the pest. T. sinensis was first introduced into Japan and USA, and since 2005 into Europe.
The effectiveness of this biological control strategy was confirmed firstly in Japan.
In this study, performed in Italy in 2012 and 2013, 8 years after the first release of T. sinensis, we show the drastic reduction in gall wasp infestation in the sites where the parasitism rate reaches 75%, and emphasize the success of biological control by T. sinensis in Italy.
