Abstract
The apple cultivation in the Po valley faced big changes thanks to new dwarfing rootstocks, training systems and active breeding programs.
Besides training systems, the climatic conditions have fostered the spread in bi-colour apple cultivars, particularly suited for this region.
Among them, of interest is Modì® (CIVG 198*), the scab resistant result of a cross between Liberty × Gala. Fruits are harvested 7 days before Golden Delicious and are marketed within a private club.
This investigation was carried out in several orchards with different planting densities and training systems (Spindle, Mini spindle and Bi-axis). The main aim of this research was to evaluate the fruiting habitus to define on which bearing wood Modì® produces good quality fruit.
Yield and qualitative parameters were collected and discussed. Modì® trained to a bi-axis (3,030 trees/ha), produced 70% on spurs inserted on axis and 23% on shoots in the 2nd year, while the spindle (3,788 trees/ha and same age) yielded mainly on the old bearing wood and less than 30% on shoots and brindle-type shoots.
Yield was concentrated in the high and middle part of the canopy, where more spurs are present.
Fruit from spurs on the bi-axis trees had higher sugar content, but even though DA index (IAD) showed fruit less ripened compared with other formations.
Further investigations will be done in order to optimize Modì® orchard management according to the different training systems.
