Abstract
In previous study, 454-pyrosequencing and microarray analyses were performed to search for genes displaying chilling-mediated differential expression patterns in dormant buds of Japanese apricot (Prunus mume). Gene ontology analysis demonstrated that the genes related to oxylipin biosynthesis and metabolic pathways were significantly up-regulated by chilling accumulation, suggesting that oxylipin biosynthesis could be induced during chilling-mediated events, such as cold hardiness and endodormancy release, in dormant buds.
Recently, 9-hydroxy-10-oxo-12(Z), 15(Z)-octadecadienoic acid (KODA), anoxylipin, was reported to have promotional effects on the endodormancy break of Japanese pear (Pyrus pyrifolia) flower buds.
This study investigated the effects of KODA on the dormancy break of Japanese apricot and peach (Prunus persica). No dormancy breaking effect was observed using KODA (16 or 160 µM) treatment alone during the endodormant period of Japanese apricot and peach.
The dormancy breaking effects of KODA in combination with cyanamide, a dormancy breaking reagent, were further tested.
Although cyanamide alone had dormancy breaking effects for peach, the use of KODA (16 µM) enhanced the dormancy breaking effects of cyanamide (0.5%) during the late stage of endodormancy.
For Japanese apricot, bud burst was enhanced using a KODA treatment in combination with cyanamide (0.3%) in comparison to cyanamide treatment alone when applied after the release from endodormancy.
The possible role of KODA in peach and Japanese apricot dormancy breakage and bud burst was discussed.
