Abstract
Auburn University has replicated pecan (Carya illinoinensis [Wangenh.] K. Koch) cultivar evaluations at five locations, four in Alabama and one in Georgia.
Some sites are completely unsprayed to allow more rapid expression and screening for pests, especially pecan scab (Fusicladium effusum [G. Winter]). Other sites are low input with minimal spraying, or moderate input with a normal spray program.
The most recently-established site, at Friendship Pecans near Albany, Georgia, will have newer practices used by larger growers including hedging, crop thinning, and banding fertilizer, to more accurately reflect cultivar performance under conditions used by large growers managing intensively.
Currently recommended cultivars from these evaluations are categorized as follows and include: for homeowner plantings Amling, Adams 5; for low input plantings Ellis, Excel, Prilop, Gafford, Headquarters, McMillan; for high input plantings Ellis, Eclipse, Caddo, Creek, Giftpack.
