Abstract
The spectrum of plant protection products (PPP), which can be used to cope up with harmful organisms in hop cultivation, is getting narrower.
Based on the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) conclusions, the European Commission proposes non-renewal or restricted renewal to the Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed (PAFF). It concerns fosetyl-Al, which is the only fungicide registered to control primary infection of downy mildew (Pseudoperonospora humuli). The restriction concerns also other important fungicides used to control secondary infection of this disease (boscalid, metalaxy-M, cymoxanil, copper compounds). We must search for an alternative for thiamethoxam, the only efficient insecticide in the control of hop flea beetles (Psylliodes attenuatus) or bifenezate, the only miticide able to control higher densities of two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae), etc.
Under such situation it is critical to have adequate alternatives to manage the replacement of the rejected PPPs.
Therefore, new possibilities of environmentally safe hop protection using botanical pesticides, basic substances and natural myco-parasites are studied.
Fennel and thyme extracts, chitosan, or the product Rock Effect, which is based on the oil of Pongamia pinnata showed good efficacy on hop flea beetles, damson hop aphid (Phorodon humuli) and two-spotted spider mite in field trials and laboratory tests.
Bio-fungicide Polyversum (Pythium oligandrum), a myco-parasite, which occurs naturally in the soil, showed very good efficiency against soil fungal diseases as well as against secondary infection of downy mildew in field trials.
