Abstract
The purpose of this study was to perform inventory, collect and analyze hops growing in Finland and evaluate their potential use in the brewing industry and beyond.
A set of 1413 old healthy hops that regularly bear cones were collected including also related traditional knowledge.
A subsample set was analyzed with microsatellite markers and 260 unique genotypes were discovered.
Clustering analyses showed that Finnish hops grouped together and separated well from the majority of hops from the rest of the world.
Evaluation of the chemical quality of cones was done by the analysis of alpha and beta acids by liquid chromatography and the analysis of volatile components by gas chromatography.
The average amount of alpha and beta acids was 2.6±1.7% and 3.0±1.5%, respectively (n=547). Grouping based on the ratios of major sesquiterpenes in hops divided analyzed samples into four main groups, of which three had three subgroups and the fourth with two.
Based on obtained results 26 hops were selected for further evaluation in small-scaled field trials and microbrewery experiments after virus free plants will be generated and multiplied.
