Effects of chlorine releasing compound and ethylene inhibitors on vase life of Shimmer cut gerbera

Abstract
Gerbera is one of the most important cut flowers in worlds market, ranked the top ten of cut flowers in The Netherlands, USA and Japan.
Dassada blossom company in Thailand tries to launch this Shimmer light pink gerbera species to Japan, but they also face some problems as deterioration of flowers which might be caused by xylem clogging and accumulated ethylene in the shipping process.
The study aimed to extend vase life of Gerbera jamesonii Shimmer by conducting an experiment in a 3×2 factorial in completely randomized design (CRD) with different concentrations of calcium hypochlorite; Ca(ClO)2 (0, 50 and 100 ppm) to prevent microbial occlusions and 1-MCP (non-fumigated and fumigated) for ethylene removal.
It was found that Ca(ClO)2 in vase solution or C2H4 removal agent as fumigated 1-MCP alone in Shimmer gerbera was effective in maintaining the postharvest quality of the flowers.
The appearance of flowers demonstrated that 50 ppm of Ca(ClO)2 gave the best result in delayed deterioration score, while 1-MCP gave the better percent to initial flower FW change and delayed deterioration score.
The combination effects of both factors had various responses in postharvest parameter.
This study partially provides baseline information for Thai commercial cut flower companies to improve the lifespan of Shimmer gerbera species.
